Happy99とは、自己増殖を繰り返しながら破壊活動を行なう「ワーム」プログラムの一つ。1999年初頭に猛威を振るった。 このワームは、電子メールやNetNewsの記事に添付ファイルとして寄生してユーザに配信されてくる。 本文は空で、「HAPPY99.EXE」というファイルが添付されている。これを開くと、「Happy New Year 1999!」というメッセージとともに花火の画像を表示する。その間に、自分自身を「SKA.EXE」「SKA.DLL」という名前でWindowsのシステムディレクトリの中にコピーし、さらにWindowsがインターネットなどの通信に使う「WSOCK32.DLL」というプログラムに感染する。 感染したWSOCK32.DLLは、インターネットに接続してデータを送信する際にSKA.DLLを呼び出し、「HAPPY99.EXE」を電子メールやNetNewsの投稿に自動的に添付して送信してしまう? メールに添付された「HAPPY99.EXE」を開かなければ感染しないが、「差出人」が普段メールをやり取りしている知人であるため、「ひっかかる」人が続出した。
